Caring for Soapstone Countertops

Soapstone is a beautiful and highly durable natural stone that has longevity when properly maintained. Just like any natural stone, resealing it once a year and refraining from the use of harsh chemicals will leave your countertops in great condition.

To maintain its lustrous appearance, it’s advisable to regularly apply mineral oil to the surface. This not only enhances the stone’s deep, rich color but also helps it develop an attractive patina over time. While soapstone is less prone to scratching than other natural stones, using cutting boards and avoiding dragging heavy objects across the surface is recommended. Gentle cleaning with a mild soap and water solution is sufficient for daily maintenance, and avoiding acidic or abrasive cleaners will help preserve the stone’s integrity.

Care and Maintenance of Soapstone

Do	Do Not
Clean stone surface with a mild liquid dishwashing detergent or neutral PH cleaner with warm water and a soft cloth or sponge.	Do not use products that contain a high acidic content, like lemon, ammonia, vinegar, etc. The high acidic content can dull the finish, and eat away the sealer protecting your stone from stains.
Use natural stone cleaners on your surface as long as they are approved for natural stone.	Do not use harsh chemicals like paint strippers, bleach, oven cleaners, or drain cleaners. These materials can break down your sealer.
Do be sure to re-seal your granite countertop annually.	Do not drag heavy objects across the counter.
Apply mineral oil for enhancement.	Do not cut directly on your countertops. Always use a cutting board.
You may leave hot pots and pans on your granite countertop, but we do not recommend you do so for extended periods of time. Make sure to utilize a trivet as much as possible.	Do not drop heavy objects on your countertop as they may chip or break the stone.
